The deeper story of Genchu and Hirotomo is pretty tragic, and might make a solid prequel story! The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of revisiting it in the future to flesh the narrative out and paint the full range of forces working against Hirotomo to bring about his downfall. But I dare not promise that, because if I ever do come back to it, it’ll be so long after the comic has ended that no one will remember what the story is a prequel for anyway! Or I guess that just means it has to be good enough of a story to stand on its own (unlike the Star Wars prequels)!

We’ve got plenty of great questions for the NN4B Final Thoughts And FAQs podcast, which Joe and I will be recording Monday evening, so it should be ready to post along with the final page next week!

I haven’t seen Avengers Endgame yet, but I’ll likely have seen it by next/last update, so I’ll probably have opinions on that movie. How fitting to end the comic with an Endgame post!

Thank you for creating this work of beauty.

  • (Fig.2) Ocean Burning

Last panel: “Uh-oh. Where’s the Indian guru at the moment…”

    • Xinef

Probably at the vegetarian competition 😉

… or maybe at the Tao-tacos xD
Or Taco-taos? Good grief, Tao is such a complex topic, I don’t even know.

Glad to see the Japanese-greek community thriving in edo

Only one more page? I is sad.
I remember other comics fondly like Inverloch and 8-bit theater. NN4B has amazing art and great humor, it is very quotable, it has gathered a good following from a great community and the story is very interesting, even if a lot of material got cut (dare I say less is more).
Don’t you worry about being forgotten, you won’t be. If you take two years to flesh out some backstories as a short series of shorts, then many people will still care. Keep making the print volumes and people will buy them. Keep your Facebook page up to date. There’s money here but also much love for your (future) work. People care about this almost two decades worth of creative work and it’s a legacy that needs maintaining.

    • GeoTheManSir

Indeed, we certainly didn’t forget about NN4B during the Hiatus. I’m sure most of us will remember and reread NN4B for decades.

    • Turul

Clearly, NN4B wishes to be modest and not outdo The Phoenix Requiem (exactly 800 pages)!

And I certainly hope there will be printed volumes of the later parts of the comic, and that the website will stay up for the foreseeable future. I know I’ll want to reread the story many times in the future, because it’s the kind of story that makes me feel happy.

      • clogboy

        Phoenix Requiem was 800 pages?!?
Can’t remember how long Inverloch was…

        • Turul

Yes, it was! I haven’t read Inverloch. 😀

          • clogboy

Also somewhere in the sub- 800 page range.

    • Tim “Azur3flame” Eldred

Seriously. Such memorable quotes as “Fish ain’t meat!” and “Dont stop not dying!” have made it into my daily repertoire. Shared NN4B with a few of my friends and some of the quotes became in-jokes for us. Been reading since almost the beginning, and I’ll be sure to come back now and then for nostalgia.

      • IDPounder

        *ahem*

        “FISH AIN’T BREAKFAST!!”

        • Tim “Azur3flame” Eldred

Also correct. We paraphrased a bit to fit our little in-joke narrative. INSPIRATION!

  • Hfar

Huh. Who’d of thought that the bar to end the world would a gyro bar?

    • Turul

The bar to end all bars!

      • clogboy

        Definitely raising the bar here…

        • http://www.comicsagonistes.hackenbush.org/ Ginger Mayerson

          Bar none.

  • Wile E Coyote

You can certainly make it work as a standalone prequel, which is prob best for any side-story type stuff…but surely reminders of this story would just mean people will have to read it all over again to have the experience of a new adventure. Forgetting details is while works have re-read value and movies have re-watch value…otherwise everything would be seen it, and done…ya know? So yeah, people can always re-read the story WITH the prequel in mind to make new connections with a new experience ;3

    boooo

  • Kid Chaos

Endgame is awesome! Just be sure to get a good seat; I got squished way up front and to the right, so my perspective was way off. 😜

    • http://www.comicsagonistes.hackenbush.org/ Ginger Mayerson

It was awesome, totally worth the time and money. And because of Alex’s Monday post, I saw it that afternoon. Thanks, Alex!

  • SlugFiller

You’re actually going to do it, aren’t you? You’re actually going to end the comic with a priest, taoist, and buddhist going to a bar.

Will it just be the last panel? Is that going to be the point? No more panels, hence, no more world?

    • clogboy

A black or white panel saying ‘The End’ (hopefully followed with a ‘..?’)

  • endplanets

The series is coming to an end. I remember that back in high school I was the only freshman who knew about Tao/Doa in history class due to Cho. I now have my Master’s Degree.

  • Nos Rin aka CTCO

Oh man, endgame was, it was uh… it was wow….
It was a GOOD movie, very good, but some of the plot gave me a headache.

    • Namaphry

Wouldn’t be true to the source material if it didn’t!

      • Nos Rin aka CTCO

        I suppose so, lol

  • Nos Rin aka CTCO

man, all my old comics are slowly coming to an end. I’m so glad I have webtoon now. The times are changing. :(
actually most of them have already ended. like DrMcninja, Dominic Deegan, uhmm……
At least I still got nerfnow.

  • Frank Royce Harr

Mmmmm. I could go for one.
