Ina be all like “watchoo touchin’ my man fo!” I also like that Matrix refers to Cho as “Fists”. Also, I suppose if you perhaps had a rather dirty mind, you could come to some very wrong conclusions about where this scene is going. That may or may not have been intentional.

In other news, I’m going to try and do another two pages update this week, so look for the next page on Thursday! And we may do another Smash Bros Friday Night battle, I’ll keep you posted.

Joe and I also saw Avengers: Age of Ultron! I have some mildly spoilery thoughts on it:

  • The title is very misleading, seeing as how there is no lengthy period of time pertaining to Ultron in this film. No “AGE OF ULTRON”, if you will.
  • The Joss Whedon banter is in top form. Some people complain about Whedon banter, I think it is the heart of his films and I love it to death. Hang those lanterns, Whedon, HANG ‘EM HIGH!
  • All that sexual tension between Hawkeye and Black Widow in the first Avengers seems kiiiinda awkward now!!
  • Quicksilver had no problem moving people out of harm’s way throughout this film, but then he felt the need to use his body as a shield to stop bullets instead of just moving Hawkeye and the little kid out of harm’s way as he had before! Just gonna say it, Days of Future Past Quicksilver is the superior interpretation.
  • It bugs me that the teaser for Cap 2 made all these Hydra characters intimidating, and then they were all pushovers at the beginning of this film. If I was watching these movies in order I’d feel like I missed out on a storyline.
  • The hellicarrier may be my favorite thing about any Marvel movie ever. That sucker is like every kid’s fantasy wrapped up in one uber rad package!
  • this movie has far too much undefinable, subtle mind control as a plot device.
  • Why is Black Widow dressed up like an extra from Tron Legacy?
  • Robots in Marvel movies seem to both be incredibly durable and easily blown apart all at once depending on what the scene requires.
  • After a public Hulk rampage, Bruce Banner dejectedly says the world has finally seen the true Hulk. And yet I could’ve sworn in the first Avengers movie, they show a clip on a monitor of the Ang Lee Hulk film from 2003, implying that it, and possibly its soft reboot sequel, were part of continuity. If that’s the case, the world’s seen the Hulk go ape shit several times now! Just being super nerdy here.
  • Why should I care about Thanos again? The guy has done a whole lot of sitting-in-a-chair in this film franchise, and it’s not exactly been intimidating.
  • I’d totes recommend Age of Ultron! In the end, Ultron doesn’t feel any greater a threat than Loki in the first Avengers, but it’s still a heck of a good time.

Matrix – using double entendre against those who don’t understand it since 2199.

    • I can’t imagine why everyone just assumes Matrix is a time traveler…

      • Xinef says:

Oh no, I’m just assuming that NN4B is taking place in a virtual world created by some machines.

        • Ah, okay, that’s a much more reasonable theory. People make great batteries, after all. I learned that from a movie once, I think.

          • Da'Zlein says:

Which movie was it again? Matrix, do you know?

          • SlugFiller says:

Must have been Puella Magi Madoka Magica

          • Hfar says:

Human batteries. Still a stupid plot device from an otherwise awesome movie.

          • Neska says:

Yeah, that part never made sense . . . so I just decided on my own that the machines actually kept humans around as pets: something to play/fight with to keep from getting bored. All the energy likely coming from geothermal and nuclear sources.

          • Hfar says:

Curious, but there’s was actually once a different, more canonical reason why robots kept humanity around.

Originally the motivation was that the AI were using human brains as part of a neural network used for additional computing power. This is actually slightly plausible, because IRL a single human brain has far more processing power than even the most modern super computer.

However when the Wachowski siblings pitched this idea, the executive producer said that “audiences wouldn’t get it” and that it “needed to be changed to something more ‘accessible'” and thus we got human batteries instead.

In my mind I amend the film to go with the Wachowski sibling’s original intent.

          • Neska says:

That does make more sense than human batteries, and also doesn’t negate the keeping of human pets . . . human processor pets!

          • Xinef says:

In Ken’s case it does seem to make a lot of sense… I mean, you pour alcohol in and you get pure energy out. Isn’t that the way some fuel cells work?

  5. Flaming Squirrel says:

“I’ll be right here.” *glower finger trick*
I chose that because all of the jokes I could make from panel 6 were… bad.

I intend to go see Age of Ultron, but I’ll be honest here- I’m kinda tired of superhero movies. At any given time, it seems like at least 50% of the movies being shown are superhero movies. I’m not even sure if I have it in me to go see Batman vs Superman.

    • I agree that we’re over saturated. When Marvel mixes other genres into them, they’re a lot more interesting, like Guardians and Winter Soldier. But overall, I’m a tad burnt out on treading the same tropes in the same way. Also Man of Steel was a huge letdown for me due to its total lack of ‘good feels’. I used to think of DC Comics as the more light hearted of the comic universes, with its made up cities and near perfect heroes. BvS Looks dark and depressing as a teenage angst session, and that does not excite me in the least. I feel like you’re only allowed to go that dark if you’ve earned it, if you’ve set up a suitably dire scenario, otherwise it’s tone is just going to feel hilariously shoe horned in!!

      • Flaming Squirrel says:

Really? I’ve always felt the opposite about Marvel and DC. Marvel had bright colorful heroes like Captain America and Thor, while DC had… Batman. Now that I think about it, Batman is probably the only reason I think DC is the darker universe.

        • Batman is certainly DC’s most popular property, but Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern, they’re all these craz, brightly colored god people. Well, except maybe The Flash, he’s an average dude to the best of my knowledge. Even Batman, though, is pretty much god-like in his endless brilliance and resources. They’re all super mythical figures while in DC, it feels like a bunch of schmucks were given super powers, which always seemed grittier and more real! But in the movies I think DC’s been trying to brand itself as the gritty one, building off of the tone of the Nolan Batman films, while Marvel’s just having a ball.

          • Flaming Squirrel says:

What did you think of the Ant Man trailer? Personally, I thought it looked stupid. I know Marvel movies are a more lighthearted than DC, but I draw the line at tiny men wrangling wasps.

          • I mean if it’s a comedy, then I’ll probably like it. I don’t like the trailer because it’s scored like a dramatic action film. News flash, movie trailer makers, if your movie is goofy, don’t give it a BWAAAAM inception sound! Don’t give it epic, dramatic orchestral swells! Give it goofy music, let us know it’s okay to think what we’re seeing is goofy! Ugh, tonal inconsistency drives me nuts.

          • Flaming Squirrel says:

Exactly! Guardians of the Galaxy was good because they new it was a ridiculous setup, and they used that. They didn’t try to turn it into The Dark Knight In Space. Can you imagine how the Deadpool trailer would have played out of they tried to take ANY of that seriously?

      • Xinef says:

They could make more use of Nordic mythology though. Like the scene where Thor was disguised as a woman in order to get Mjolnir back from some giants. Back in the day, they knew how to write… ekhem… forge interesting stories.

    • Xinef says:

Because people criticize what they care about 😉

    • I am a nitpicky bastard. If Joe weren’t even more so, I doubt we could stand a movie going experience with each other.

      • Nomad94 says:

I’m sure the guy who does Cinemasins on YouTube will find more than 9. I didn’t want spoilers so I’ll read your “nitpicks” and compare them to my own after I see it.

        • Nomad94 says:

Saw it last week. Loved it. Recommend it. Anyway, I do have a handful of nitpicks

          *(Spoiler alert)*
1 I understand and appreciate how Joss took some of the criticisms of the first film and improved (char Dev,ect) buy I feel he went overboard with the collateral issue, making it an entire subplot with the twins and all
2 Quicksilver. I expected the quicksilver from days of future past, or something close: quickly bored, ping pong with self, epic Slomo scene showing off his powers make the ultron bots pouch each other, ect. Instead I get a bitter flash knockoff with blue lightning instead of yellow. I mean he wasn’t awful, he had some cool moments and he did have some char Dev, but it wasn’t enough to make his death truly painful. True the x men one wasn’t highly developed, but he had a cooler portrayal.
3 vision. He’s the best of both ultron and Jarvis (who is established as superior to ultron) with the ultimate cybernetic body and has a infinity stone In His head. Yet when he does the whole 1on1 vs ultron, he fails(?) and disappears for half the fight because …drama
A couple minor things as well, ( arrows killing ultrons, how did stark not loose his arm, ect) but I’ve slept since then.
          —–
I agree, why the tron widow? The original costume was awesome as it was, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Same could be said for cap (winter soldier cocostume was the best IMO)

However, I’m prone to disagree with you’re opinion on the widow/Hawkeye awkwardness. iThe only reference to romance was Loki’s allegation. (Unless offhandedly mentioned elsewhere). The way Hawkeye and widow act when together seems more like a brothers in arms type camaraderie forged by past fighting experience rather than having the hots for each other. (Seeing how those two fight together supports the assumption that they have fought together before)

      • Kid Chaos says:

I am *not* a nitpicky bastard, and I thoroughly enjoyed “Age of Ultron” (and “Ex Machina”, because the supreme dick move at the end was just the cherry on top, so to speak). I am a little surprised at how hard they sold sparkage between Hulk and Black Widow. I could’ve sworn it was Widow/Hawkeye in the first movie. But hey, whatever floats your boat, right?

  7. SYABM says:

In TIH, Hulk publicly fights the military and another monster. In Avengers, he’s fighting alien invaders. Since then, he’s only been called out for “Code Green” situations. This is the first time the public has seen him straight-up attacking civilians and cops. If the Ang Lee hulk was in the movie, it’s just an easter egg.

  8. Hfar says:

As one with a supremely dirty mind, I do indeed intend to come to some very wrong conclusions about where this scene is heading. The fact that a master of “fists” is involved is only extra icing on the cake.

  9. Kid Chaos says:

Matrix is devoting an awful lot of time and energy on the whole team, not just Yori. Have to wonder what her endgame is…

  10. Dichu says:

I’m gonna respond to a few of your criticisms here (SPOILERS!):
-While there wasn’t an actual age of Ultron, there was the threat of one, so maybe it was meant to be one of those movies named after what they’re fighting against, like Winter Soldier.
-Quicksilver only has average strength (for a fit man) and there were two people he had to save from a machine gun, so maybe he just knew that he wouldn’t be fast enough to make two trips, in which case, it’s Hawkeye’s fault that he’s dead.
-In Winter soldier, there were a only three heroes, two of which are normal people with training and equipment, and they still fought the individuals rather easily, while in Avengers they were a team of nothing but heroes and Hydra had taken some big wounds in Agents of Shield.
-Finally, it’s obvious that you should be afraid of Thanos because he just got new gloves 😉

    • Yeah, the Winter Soldier was a dumb subtitle for Cap 2!!

Don’t go blaming Hawkeye for Quicksilver’s inability to stop some bullets! For the fastest man alive, it’s kind of weird that his solution to save Hawkeye and child immediately went to ‘stand still’. I’ll bet if I had impossible super speed and I used it on a daily basis, I could probably think of a few other solutions. SUCH AS throwing something at the shooting plane! Sure, that sounds pretty lame, but if he throws something while he’s running, what ever that something is will be moving INSANELY FAST, like bullet fast. It could do quite some damage to the plane, or at least knock it away a bit so the bullets wouldn’t be a threat. ANYway, I wouldn’t want to get too wrapped up in Quicksilver’s dumb sacrifice, even though it annoys me to no end!

I need to watch Agents of Shield! It’s cool that it ties into the movie, but it doesn’t help the drama of the movie itself, so I’m still gonna take points off! You know, the points, that I guess I’ve been doling it, maybe, I dunno.

Thanos is also very purple, a big purple guy. Quite terrifying.

And I agree, the first film was better. This movie didn’t need so many extra characters. The Vision is basically useless. I’m not sure how his inclusion benefited the film’s story. I’d also argue that scarlet witch and quicksilver didn’t add much, other than giving us a few more mind control moments and my favorite Hawkeye line to date! I still enjoyed it, I like the banter and some of the action scenes, although they do become exhausting pretty quick. One of my friends basically said her favorite part was when they’re all drunkenly trying to pick up Thor’s hammer. I’ll bet a lot of fans love those type of scenes. We need more of those and less of POW EXPLOSION, because as wonderful as POW EXPLOSION is, it rarely gives us much character development or reason to care. Character drama can occasionally be enhanced by action, but a lot of these Marvel movies haven’t found the best balance. Luckily the character bits are often great enough that they transcend being crushed under the weight of mindless, forgettable action! *RANT COMPLETE!!*

      • Dichu says:

Quicksilver may be the fastest man alive, but, while it wasn’t made abundantly clear, he was not born with his powers in this universe; he and his sister were part of an at least somewhat recent experiment that gave them their powers, and it was pretty obvious that he wasn’t the brightest, so he may just have not realized all the applications of his powers.

The hammer scene was one of my favorites as well, especially when Cap got it to scoot and Thor got worried for a second.

And while the Vision didn’t have much point, it appears as though he will be a big part of the next one, and I don’t think very many people would watch a whole other movie to learn his origin story, even though origin stories are generally my favorite. He just doesn’t have enough personality to be a solo character, so tying him in with Age of Ultron was probably just a method of exposition for the third.

On a similar note, I think the main cast is growing weary of their roles, so they had to find replacements for them all.

Go for Matrix man. Forget that other bitchy chick.

  12. Ryan says:

I like how any time Ina is confused, she also looks angry, like “How dare you make me confused, this is your fault!”

    • Hfar says:

“I’m angry that you’ve made me confused! But at the same time I’m also confused as to why I’m angry that you’ve confused me. Gah!”

  13. Sunwu says:

  14. Ben Johnston says:

You should care about Thanos because he’s collecting those super gems that keep popping up (the cube from Avengers 1, the goop from Thor 2, the rock in Vision’s forehead, and the ball in GotG). One gives a person the ability to wipe out a planet with a smidgen of effort. All 6 (yes there’s two more) give a person the ability to erase literally half the population of the universe with an idle thought as well as challenge the closest things to real gods in the Marvel universe, and I’m not talking about the Asgardians.

  15. Nos Rin aka CTCO says:

Gawd, has it been that long since Age of Ultron? What a let down. Best part of the movie was the hammer jokes.
