I guess Ken wasn’t concentrating on her face (which is mostly covered by the way), but observed other … details … which don’t really help you in remembering, unless you happen to be well acquainted – which I doubt. 😀
In any case, YAY for a fellow clan member! I do hope for some kind of romance, although Yumiko probably deserves better… 😀
Her comment in the last page seems a little hard to interpret without audio. With this page, I imagine it was like she was thinking out loud, like “*sigh,* save us(using the royal we, I think) from this darn sentimental daisuke.” Referring to Yumiko, of course. Previously I thought she was reading the message, and was going with the “Genchu left a note there” theory. It seems that Yumiko may be unable to speak, as part of the injuries she received.
Ken: “That’s all well and good. You still hit me with a tree trunk.”
Daisuke: “In my defense, you were swinging a sword the size of said tree trunks at me.”
The question that we all (or perhaps just me) want to know: has Ken remembered his childhood-friend-that-fought-with-him-against-bullies already? The flashback seemed to imply that…
I guess this makes me a dumbass, but it took me a very, veeeeeeery, veeeeeeeeeeeeery long time to work out that Yumiko was the eyepatch chick. I mean…if she’s the one that decided not to kill Ken, then why isn’t Suzuka like:
Bitch I don’t care if he was the love of your life,
kill this fool before I rip out your other eye.
Suzuka’s a surprisingly chill ninja commander. She sort of just rolls with things, she’s very Jack Sparrow-esque in her ability to update her plans with the changing situation.
Wait. “He?”
Who’s talking on that last panel? Is it Ken?
If it’s Ken, that ninja he’s looking at is a… man?
Forgive my failure to understand the situation if I’m wrong or something. A little lost here.
Yumiko, the silent ninja in black, wrote the note and gave it to Suzuka, who dropped it on the previous page. So Ken is reading Yumiko’s note in which she referred to him as “he” and herself as “I”. I may have over explained that!
Ah, I thought it was Ken who said that thing because… he’s near the last panel.
Sorry for not reading the comments further below if you already explained that thing repeatedly.
Huh… so they knew each other. That explains her not killing him, but why didn’t he remember her? Her disguise doesn’t seem that complete.
Because puberty changes appearances a lot and and Daisuke isn’t the most observant person in the world.
This is a good explanation.
Would you recognize someone you met 20 years ago as a kid?
Heck under ninja garb you wouldn’t even recognize someone you met 2 weeks ago.
This is the most likely explanation.

Alcohol causes long-term memory problems. At this point, Ken barely remembers the name of his clan.
Daisuke: Damnit! This is going to ruin my brooding image!
Nah, now he’s just got a brood buddy.

Suzuka’s previous page comment was intentionally vague, leaving this page to clear up her meaning, which it seems it did!
At last, someone who shares the pain. Someone I can talk to.
No doubt all Ken’s anger shall be abated…!
If you like Killing Wataro! and getting caught in the rain!
If you’re not into yoga, if you have half a brain!
That…makes absolutely no sense at all. [pause] I like it! 😀
Do these just pop into your head or are you putting a lot of time into them? Inquiring minds want to know!

For the kids
Ken: “That’s all well and good. You still hit me with a tree trunk.”
Daisuke: “In my defense, you were swinging a sword the size of said tree trunks at me.”
“I didn’t have anything smaller that seemed to be working.”
D’aaaw! They used to know each other! And I’m willing to bet twenty bucks she used to kick his butt back then too.
ooo I hope she saved him once from bullies
Nah, she probably WAS the bully.
OH SNAP! We’re just gonna change some script now because that’s too delicious.
The question that we all (or perhaps just me) want to know: has Ken remembered his childhood-friend-that-fought-with-him-against-bullies already? The flashback seemed to imply that…
I’ll second that!
…I so knew it!!
Oh, so Ken’s banter while he was playing lumberjack wasn’t just idle chatter after all ‘eh?
He could not have known that at the time!
Now make babies! Repopulate the clan!
In the fifth square:
Ken: “So it’s a deal, if we’re not married until our 21st birthday…”
there first child shall be named Kenmiko
The second shall be named Shoryuken.
Oh god.
Not only will they be ninjas, they’ll be ninjas with giant swords!
They’ll be the weirdest loggers of all time, devastating forests and replanting them the same day.
That’s a lot of work, and Ken is kinda lazy…
wouldn’t be the first time a Big Zambato sat around and did nothing while the woman did all the hard work.
Man these guys are good at throwing paper around.
well duh, they’re NINJAS.

or something.

….
I ship this now.
Ship it! Ship it good!
Wait… you’re just now starting?
Wait. “He?”
Who’s talking on that last panel? Is it Ken?

Yes! I’m shipping Ken and Yumi more with every page!
Sure, just give us even MORE reason to ship ’em why don’cha?!
Wait… she might be his sister? In which case they can’t romance? Am I missing something?
More like distant cousins, or something. 😜
I ain’t judging, even if they were siblings. I play CK2. Sisterwives are the next best thing after daughterwives. MOAR ZWEDODAH!
