The case has been opened!

I saw Hidden Figures, it’s good stuff! The theater was empty, which is usually a great opportunity to MST3K my way through a movie, but Hidden Figures leaves little to lampoon, partly because of the subject matter and partly because it’s just very good. I’ll probably pick up the audiobook.

Speaking of audiobooks, there are currently the first three volumes released of an English translation of the Legend of the Galactic Heroes! Joe and I love the anime series and consider it one of the greats, even though it’s never gotten an official state-side release (tragedy!). I definitely recommend the book series, and we’re both crossing our fingers hoping it’s successful enough that maybe the anime finally gets an official translation.

I’ve had Splatoon sitting in its plastic wrap since I don’t remember when. I finally busted it open and it’s a heck of a good time! The online community is certainly alive and well, which is heartening considering how often I hear about the death of the WiiU. Splatoon may honestly be the most fun I’ve had with a shooter! Granted the bar is extremely low on that since I’m not much of a shooter fan.

    If that rope has an iron ring at the other end of it, that would be a kyoketsu shoge. As a totally amateur student of historical weapons this would give me a minor nerdgasm. It’s a relatively obscure, difficult to master, and completely lethal weapon system in the right hands.

    I mean… Tang raises a somewhat valid point. That, and he’s trying to not let Cho end the world. I’m having a bit of trouble seeing them as pure evil in this page.

      It may not be that he is so inherently evil, but his way of thinking is dangerous. He believes in a guiding force which in and of itself isn’t dangerous. However, these two’s action show a might makes right philosophy, and now they could be interpreted as saying that whatever happens is the will of the Tao. These together can create a mindset where one interprets their own will in place of the guiding will. After all, if the guiding will didn’t want you to do something, then it would have stopped you. I think these guys may have started off with intentions that were only half selfish and are now advancing to full on selfish.

        True, but Cho is doing the same thing. “Screw my friends, if the Tao wants for me to destroy the world then Imma do it.” Wu and Tang might be trying to take over the monastery, but as an outside party looking in I would have to side with the guys who DON’T want the planet to go boom.

        I mean, I keep all my stuff there.

          That is a compelling argument. After all everyone needs some place to put their stuff.

          The difference (to me at least) is that Cho doesn’t subscribe a might makes right philosophy. He seems to be a go with the flow kinda guy. That creates a difference in how to address this all encompassing guiding force and what to do with it.

          Still I am with you on the world not ending. Definitely would make for a bad day.

            That’s even scarier, man! “I like to think I’m a pretty chill guy. I like to just go with flow, and right now the flow is telling me to destroy everything and everyone. Slaughter them all in a horrific fiery inferno. Show no mercy. Every man, woman, and child must die. I am coming for you, and you shall all know that I am Death.”

            I don’t know if you really want to sell being death you are going to need a pale horse.

          Although there is this little detail, that we don’t truly know if the world will end when Cho, Alvarez and Vasu meet in a fine establishment. That’s only a prophecy, and based on all our previous observations of the universe there’s no reason to believe it to be true.

          In fact, it’s just as likely that the universe will end UNLESS those three meet for a drink.

          And even if the prophet (I don’t remember who that was… was it Cho’s master?) somehow knew the future, there’s still the possibility that his prophecy was misinterpreted, or that he told it knowing it to be false, but knowing that the fact some people will believe it to be true will cause the events to go in the right direction.

          In any case, the best we can do, as with any end-of-the-world-prophecies, is to try it out and learn. FOR SCIENCE!

      It doesn’t matter what they want – Tang, Wu or Cho. What matters is whoever’s left standing. That, in the end, is the will of the Tao. That’s all there is to it.

    no ONE person can claim to understand the tao. that’s why the two of them agree between themselves what the will of the tao is. They may not have learnt morals at the temple, but they certainly learnt loophole abuse 😀

    Yeah, Hidden Figures was great! I loved the humor, the characterization, and how they treated the subject material. I watched it in a theater near Oakland on M.L.K. weekend and let me tell you that place was packed!

      I’m glad it was well attended! I was disappointed that no one was in the theater at are showing, even if it is cool to have the theater to ourselves. It bums me out when good movies just don’t draw crowds because they’re not, say, a special effects extravaganza.

    Always wondered about Splatoon. We still use the wii-u, for… Netflix. And Arkham Origins, occasionally. But I’m curious about your thoughts on For Honor.

      For Honor seems cool, but its focus on multiplayer has me less interested in it than a lot of other games coming out in the next few months, Nioh, Neir, Gravity Rush 2, and BotW to name a few. I’m not that into the multiplayer experience. If I do pick up For Honor I will play exclusively as the samurai characters.

        That last part isn’t a surprise :) I had a lot of fun with their spear character. If you master the controls she has a lot of resemblance to the style of the Red Viper (GoT).
        Will keep an eye out for those games too, but FH will have a campaign mode on launch date. But yes its focus is multiplayer and I suppose the majority of their free DLC will focus on that too.

    Is it just me, or are Cho’s sayings becoming easier to interpret? I mean, that one pretty clearly is, “Yo, why you looking over there, I’m right here, ya doofus.”

    I am gonna make a prediction about the prophecy. It woll all turn out to be meta humor and the end of the world refrered to will actually be the end of the comic.
