The ambassador motivates through angry glares.

Anyone watching The Heroic Legend of Arslan? That’s like my favorite currently running anime! If the animation were a little better and most of the female characters didn’t wear such implausible clothing, it would be my ideal low fantasy anime!

  1. It’s like those dudes at the construction site who watch the one guy dig up the hole.

  2. Sunwu says:

I lost a ship full of guns for the Daimyo the other day!
Well, the Ambassador just glared at us- sometimes life ain’t okay
ran my mouth off a bit too much, ah what did I say?
Well, Genchu will translate it for me anyway!

And we’ll all float on okay
And we’ll all float on okay
And we’ll all float on anyway….

  3. IDPounder says:

Love the lighting in this, especially panel 3.

  4. Flaming Squirrel says:

I can see my old manager telling the ambassador, “You’d get a lot more work done if you took your hands out of your pockets!”

  5. DaveX says:

Now, open the crates and clean them! They were dripping with water in our first frame!

  6. CaptainBetrayer says:

That’s right. Motivate those crates. Motivate the hell out of those rifles.

If you like the Heroic Legend of Arslan, you should know that this anime is actually (indirectly, through a manga) based on a series of books by Dr. Yoshiki Tanaka, author of Legend of the Galactic Heroes, among other things. Though his books have never been released in the USA, there is a fan translation of Arslan that is currently being worked on at arslansenki.wordpress.com. The translator has just finished the first novel, The Capital Ablaze (roughly episodes 1-9 of the anime) and is working on the second, The Two Princes.

If you think the animation is lackluster and that Farangis’s outfit is way too much cheesecake to be practical, you should check out the 1990s Film/OVA versions, which used the original character designs by Yoshitaka Amano (of Final Fantasy fame). Amano did the books’ cover and inside illustrations for the Kadokawa Shoten editions (books 1-10), so in a sense, his character designs are ‘closer’ to what the author intended.

    • The connection to Galactic Heroes was actually my impetus to check out Arslan! I became aware of the Arslan OVA shortly after I started watching the new series, which I intend to check it out after the anime is over, just to avoid spoiling any major plot points. I think I prefer the newer designs over the OVA designs, barring Farangis and Arslan’s mother’s outfits. It’s a close thing, though, because the OVA’s design are so great. I Think I just like the practical, middle eastern look of the armor in the anime, which feels a bit more unique than the OVA’s more classic 80’s ‘High Fantasy’ style costumes.

I bookmarked the translation site, I’ll probably find time to read it on my phone.

The first hour of the OVA (Part I) has already been covered by the anime, so you can check that out spoiler-free. The show is currently on the second part, which roughly corresponds to book 2 of the series.

  8. Ben Johnston says:

I have not kept up with it, but the first two episodes hit all my favorite buttons, and it has been bookmarked as a result ever since then.

  9. Kid Chaos says:

    Completely period-inappropriate picture, but…

  10. Hfar says:

I just finished episode 9 of The Heroic Legend of Arslan. Three words: Narsus. Is. Awesome.

    • Between Narsus and Daryun, I dunno what they even need Arslan for! (or the rest of their army, for that matter)

      • Hfar says:

Hey, every boss needs retainers. The mistake everyone else in the series makes is assuming that Narsus and Daryun are the retainers.

        • vancho1 says:

Because, even though Narsus can take 10,000 and Dariun can take 15,000, that still leaves 55,000 Lusitanians to deal with. That’s why they even bother gathering armies and all that jazz. And don’t forget that Arslan is really good at making people like him.

  11. KungFuKlobber says:

Implausible clothing is at least 15% of what anime is all about!

  12. Xinef says:

Why does Rrricarrrdo look so sad? He did insure his cargo, right?

    … oh.

  13. Da'Zlein says:

“Ok, I think we got all the coffins”
“Ambassador, those are the crates for the guns”
    *unsheath*
    “No witnesses”

  14. Neska says:

3 boxes of guns, 2 barrels of powder . . . well, they failed to destroy the entire cargo but it could have been worse! The Wataro will only be able to arm a small number of soldiers with guns!
