Cho’s troubles with gender differentiation continue. Or maybe he just recognizes the fluidity of gender, he’s a progressive guy.

There’s a movie I want to see coming out every week this month but I haven’t managed to get to the theater yet! On the other hand, I did discover Gundam Wing is on Hulu, and I started rewatching it. Oh, the nostalgia! Before that show, the badassitude of mechs had never registered to me. It was a life changing experience but i haven’t rewatched it since highschool. I’d kinda forgotten that Heero Yuy’s a complete psychopath!

      I always pictured him with Picolo’s voice, so the joke took a while to register. Then I remembered the silly situations he often found himself in in the ninja cave.

    I thought Cho was saying that Ina’s mother must be both beautiful and perceptive, because from what he’s seen thus far Ina prooooobably didn’t get those traits from her father.

    That’s a bit uncharacteristically backhanded for Cho though, his getting genders confused is way more his style!

      that was my assumption as well. i thought he was indirectly insulting masuhiro.
      also, i have been wondering if the creators chose “Masuhiro” because it sounds like “master hero”
      which, in my experience, means “kinda dumb, but badass, and smart enough to get by”

      HEY! Masuhiro’s at least conventionally attractive! …..In my opinion. I mean I wouldn’t give him a second glance but he’s not ugly 😂

    Gundam Wing is what really got me into anime, after DBZ and the first Kenshin OVA’s. Think Ninja Scroll followed promptly after (which was sold for all ages at my local toy store… product research, people! Don’t want to know how many 12y/o it corrupted. Solid 15+ at least!)
    Cowboy Bebop cemented my addiction. Oh the memories.

      Slayers got me into anime, but Gundam Wing was probably my second anime obsession show. Kenshin was my third! I saw the OVAs after the show and I’ve been frustrated by their angst-ridden take on the character ever since. Even in the flashback Hitokiri sequences in the manga, Kenshin was never THAT dour and detached. If anything, he was kind of an aloof jerk.

      AND OH MAN NINJA SCROLL. If I’m being honest, It’s kind of a gross movie that I’m embarrassed to watch, but I do still like the fight scenes. I suppose it’s right in line with other exploitative low budget violent 80’s action films, except with great animation instead of garbage production values.

        tbh this comic seems very inspired by this sort of anime.
        Although that’s more of an indication of my narrow field of vision. I never watched Bleach or Naruto. But I did greatly enjoy Samurai 7 and Attack on Titan. Let’s not forget FMA Brotherhood. So… everything with Steampunk/SciFi/robots, some Samurai fantasy as long as it isn’t a series. I think Akame Ga Kill is the exception here.
        I agree NS is your typical 80s pulp (but lots better than Angel Cop IMO) but it is often cited as an anime landmark.

    Plot twist: Cho has never been blind. He just has his eyes closed. And he has a pretty woman tattooed to the inside of his eyelids and whenever someone talks to him he just assumes it’s her.

    Yeah, I still have a soft spot for Gundam Wing but Heero is a wee bit psychotic at times isn’t he? I mean, he only laughed whenever he brutally killed someone and threatened to murder a high school girl in cold blood because she knew too much about him.

    Duo Maxwell’s still pretty fun though, even if his dub voice is a bit on the side of “totally 90s, dude!”

      I was mainly preoccupied with the speeches; out of every anime I’ve ever seen, “GW” takes “Talking Is A Free Action” up to “13” (for comparison, “Naruto” only rates an “11” 😜). It’s the most speechifying thing this side of politics. Otherwise, good stuff. 😎

      Honestly… those kids didn’t seem particularly good at their jobs, either. Heero’s supposed to be a secret operative staying under the radar. What does he do? Rip up the invitation to the party of the most popular girl in school, then threaten to murder her. Then give speeches in class about how the colonies are planning revenge. And otherwise do everything except wave a big flag and scream, “HI THERE! I’M A CHILD SOLDIER SENT BY A TERRORIST GROUP TO KILL YOU!”

      Seriously, when you wipe out all the leaders who might have actually helped bring about peace and played completely into the hands of the megalomaniac because you can’t take two seconds to get confirmation on your intel before you start killing… you’re really not doing what the colonies sent you to do.

        I think we can all agree that Heero was not the best choice for the job, although if I recall (it’s been quite a while), he wasn’t really the one chosen for the mission, he just kind of fell into it. Am I right on that? I can’t even remember. I have been getting a kick out of his completely and total inability to maintain a low profile.

          Interesting. I can’t remember the selection process either. But it goes without a doubt that he is the most gifted pilot of the group, if not the one most at peace with the suicidal nature of the mission, and the most fanatical with nothing to lose. I think that’s the source of his apathy, and not that he’s a psychopath. He is willing to go the distance. Be it killing a young girl to keep his identity secret, or push the selfdestruct button on his suit.
          Who could forget the episode where Lady Une pointed the missiles at the colonies.

          Heero was actually the only member of the gundam team specifically chosen and trained for the job further than being told how to run a robot…

          …which really makes you wonder how he can be so bad at it. if he’s not failing at being an infiltrator, he’s trying to self-destruct his mech whenever anything goes slightly wrong… or he’s bored… or the voices in his head tell him too

        In Heero’s defense, this *was* a ruse which Treize used his resources at Oz to carefully and deliberately craft. Seriously, the Gundams would never have even attacked the place, let alone the plane, if they hadn’t been deliberately deceived. That’s not just impatience and bad intel, it was a trick.

    The only Gundam that caught my interest was G Gundam.
    Only mecha anime I’ve (personally) seen that you fight with your body and not joysticks or buttons.
